galataperform exchange

We made the trip and loved it. our hosts were very welcoming and helpful. We feel we have made lifelong friends with them.
All our performances were successful on their own terms. sally and Ilana worked outside in the local Galata environment, Paul David and I made work inside. David's cans of black paint had exploded in his suitcase, probably on the flight over. He turned what could have been a disaster into something very amazing.
We also did our collaborative piece at the end of our day to an audience of around 50 people. Although it was tough, as we had not done anything like that to an audience before, we got some very positive feedback.
Now it is down to finishing up the budget and evaluation and have an open day on the 21st June at 25 stratford grove to show our documentation of the festival and discuss ideas of how to take the project forward
We hope the Galata group will come to newcastle to perform.

galataperform exchange

i feel so priveleged to be working with such risk takers - last night we spent an hour together in a seemingly empty room with no expectation of what we would do, how we would be together and what outcomes there might be.

We made some very interesting visual imagery.

I think an audience would be fascinated by what decisions we take in a split second. I love being in a space with no idea of what im going to do. Creativity is something that you cant stop once it is unleashed. At the end we looked at how we had changed the room and how we ourselves had changed.

Magic.

We are meeting up this Sunday for food and catch up before we leave for istanbul. Sadly Sally wont be with us.

Galataperform exchange

David, Sally and I met at the Star and Shadow to make something with only ourselves. This time no props.
We used the cinema space. There were cinematic memories and traces.
Id had such a bad week that it was good to get into my body and feel it in the space. There were some fun moments during the time we moved around each other, silently.
It was hard not to use props. I couldnt resist david's shoes.

I heard from a performance artist who did his phd in Newcastle and lives in Istanbul. We will meet him during the festival there.

He wants to know if he can make some work over here so I will post him our details at 25 Stratford Grove.

Galataperform exchange

We had our fourth meeting at 25 Stratford Grove yesterday. We each brought objects and created relationships between them and ourselves for a couple of hours to get into collaboration mode.
Its always lovely to share food together, yesterday we ate turkish bread, humus and olives, home made Jerusalem artichoke and carrot soup and manchega cheese followed by fruit salad.
We talked about how excited we were to be going to istanbul. There is a lot of goodwill and support in the group. I feel happy to be with these artists.

I asked Dan, Paul's partner to take some photographs of us in the house. Its a good idea to take these a documentation slide show to Istanbul to show the artists there. We had our fourth meeting at 25 Stratford Grove yesterday. Galataperform exchange

Our funding from Arts Council has been approved so its now on to the hard work of putting our solo work and our collaboration together.
Our next meeting is on Saturday 8th March. Each artist will bring a prop and we will start making connections and relations between objects, each other within the space.

My proposal for funding included this passage:

'my living body has a menacing and delirious concreteness. I use it to serve as a complex and fascinating object of study in relation to space.
Sometimes I use it to focus on extraordinary forms of embodiment such as investigating it as an ageing artefact. or I might use it to show states of obscenity or rudeness.
It can be a receptable for huge amounts of energy. let that energy loose!..............'

Im looking forward to making work together and to putting a really good show up for Istanbul.
Now that I am in receipt of the flight tickets it feels real.

Galata exchange meeting

Meeting up at the house with artists david foggo, ilana mitchell, ginny reed, paul grimmer and sally madge.
We are making connections through dialog, feating and drinking. Our aims are to make a collaboration and a solo piece each for the Galataperform Festival in late march in istanbul.

So far we've talked a lot but today we started making something more concrete with a digital camera and a sound recorder .

Its good to be with a group of artists in a relaxed and friendly venue with endless possibilities of how we might take our work forward. I like to improvise so Im hoping we can devise something where we let ourselves be led by the NOW.

On tuesday 20th february we will know if our funding application to Arts Council has been okeyed.
Fingers crossed.

Galataperform Exchange

We had our second meeting at 25 Stratford Grove yesterday (5 01 08) with Ginny Reed, Paul Grimmer, Ilana Mitchell, John MacLean and David Foggo.
After setting out the parameters of the Event to perform as a group and solo for Galataperform an artist-led community based organisation in Istanbul Turkey we held a discussion about our work and collaboration in general.
We started by looking at a Black Market International Video of a durational performance they made in Germany in 2006. The discussion ranged over topics which included language and its use or non use in the performance sphere; what barriers there might be to the use of English in Turkey; roles we may wish to inhabit for our performances or ways in which we deny roles in the delivery of performances; how we might go about using space and the social space in interventionist ways. There were anecdotal evidences of previous work and questions about how we might overcome translating ideas into a new space and context.
The video prompted lots of discussion and we want to start by using a large space, possibly Star and Shadow to try out some ideas for ways in which to collaborate.
Next Meeting: 2nd february. following meeting 11th February. We will all bring something to show the group to push the discussions further.

25 stratford grovegalataperform

After seven months of making 25 stratford grove warm, comfortable and good to be living in, Im ready to start having artists make work, stay over, research new projects and any number of other endeavours they are considering.
I am in the process of putting in an application to Arts Council North East for some money to take six artists to Istanbul in March 2008. I was commissioned to curate part of a festival of live art there, following a piece of performance I made for Galataperform in November 2007.
Its a great opportunity to create both solo performances and hopefully a collaboration.
I will post photos of our pre-performance meetings and of the event itself, so you can keep up to date with 25 stratford grove.
Best wishes and a happy new year to all you performance artists and others out there!

25 stratford grove

Ive moved. Its been a move and a half. I got a cold and went to bed, then I got up and went to bed again. Margaret helped me get better and Phil next door cooked Italian food and boosted my energy level.
I couldnt even read a book.
People came to look at the house and we talked about how I could make the house a place for live art, performance and events. There was food; herring in lemon sauce, prawns, chorizo and lots of wine.I got drunk. Legless. but I remember the prawn curry which sustained me just enough to get me back home and into bed again.
Now Im back into my world again. It will be some time before I can open the house for work. But if you want to make suggestions, come and visit, talk about what you want, please tell me.
